The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Polish Studies; ‘the Thomas Brown Lecturer’. The person appointed will be required to teach up to 12 hours per week. The teaching, to be conducted in both Polish and English, will include lectures and tutorials/seminars for undergraduate students of the Discipline of Russian and Slavonic Studies, and students enrolled in the School’s taught Masters’ programmes.
The appointee will supervise undergraduate dissertations/case study projects, and will contribute to the teaching, examining and supervision of dissertations on taught post-graduate courses.The post will also involve participation in examinations and administrative duties within the Discipline and School. Within the constraints of a fixed-term appointment, the School will endeavour to support the research aspirations of the successful candidate as far as possible; full participation in the School’s regular research seminar will be encouraged.
Context
In 1846, Thomas Brown M.A., LL.B., bequeathed and designated funds for the maintenance of a Lecturer in some one or other of the languages enumerated in his Will namely:- Welsh, Slavonic, Russian, Persian, Chinese, Coptic, and Sanskrit or in a near Eastern language.The said Lecturer is called the Thomas Brown Lecturer. This position is in accordance with High Court Order 1972/180SP, which sets out the governance of the trust and the Beneficiation.
As the Beneficiation stipulates that the position of The Thomas Brown Lecturer, can only be held for a limited period of appointment, this contract shall be for a fixed term period of three years.The successful candidate will contribute to, and coordinate at administrative level, the Polish Area Studies programmes offered to undergraduate students. The majority of students taking Polish are enrolled on the European Studies or the Middle Eastern and European Languages and Cultures or the Business Studies and a Language (Polish) programmes.
Post status: Fixed-Term ContractSalary: This appointment will be made on the Assistant Professor Salary Scale (€42,500 - €101,541 per annum) at a point in line with current Government pay policy. monthly/weekly payscales. (tcd.ie)
