Job Description
This placement opportunity offers a participant the chance to gain practical experience in a professional engineering consultancy office, while being supported through mentoring, supervision and structured learning.The Engineering Office Assistant will shadow and assist experienced administrative staff in day‑to‑day office activities.
The placement is designed to support learning and skills development in a real workplace environment and will provide exposure to how engineering projects are managed, documented and delivered.
During the placement, the participant will assist with general office administration, answering telephones, responding to email enquiries, document control and project filing, and will learn how reports and technical correspondence are prepared and organised.
The participant will gain experience supporting project teams, assisting with basic record‑keeping, and becoming familiar with planning, procurement and construction‑related documentation.
The role will include on‑the‑job learning, structured training, health and safety induction and ongoing support from an assigned supervisor and mentor.
A Personal Learning Plan will be agreed at the start of the placement, and the participant will complete a combination of accredited and non‑accredited training during the programme.This is a learning‑focused assistant role intended to help the participant develop workplace skills, confidence and experience over the course of the six‑month placement.
Role Description
This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection.This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.
Formal Training: Health & safety awareness and office-based safety practices
Introduction to engineering drawings, reports and technical documentation.
Use of standard office software and digital filing systemsInduction to office environment and workplace procedures.
Informal Training: On‑the‑job training through shadowing and assisting engineering and administrative staff.
Office administration skills, including document management and record‑keeping.Understanding basic planning, procurement and construction-related documentation.
Communication skills and professional workplace practicesTime management and organisational skills.
Structured training as set out in the Personal Learning Plan, including a combination of accredited and non‑accredited training relevant to the placement.
