Main Purpose of the Job: Under supervision, and within the limits of personal experience and knowledge, a Care Assistant plays a major part in creating a happy and caring atmosphere, is involved in a wide range of general caring services and duties and is expected to adopt a totally flexible approach and attitude to the challenge of the post.

Responsible to: Sister in charge of the Unit / Staff Nurse

Principal Duties of the Job:

1. To carry out all care requirements for residents, involving: Washing, dressing, bathing, toileting and other personal needs. Bed making, and sluice duties. Care of linen and personal clothing of the residents.
2. To follow the instructions of the supervising Unit Sister / Staff Nurse
3. To help with dining room duties before and after meals, assisting with the service of meals, paying particular attention to residents who may need help to take their meal. To assist with house-keeping duties e.g. keeping hand basins, table tops, etc. clean and tidy.
4. To help and support the residents to meet their spiritual, emotional and social needs, encouraging them to continue with hobbies and to join in the activities of the Home, accompanying them to the designated areas.
5. To create and maintain a supportive family atmosphere where residents can achieve maximum independence.
6. To assist with Care Plans as appropriate to the Unit.
7. To follow approved hand-over procedures at the end of each duty session.
8. To attend In-Service Training sessions on a regular basis.
9. To follow the Policies and Procedures of the Home.
10. To ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act.
11. To comply with regulations relating to Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations.
12. Such other duties as may reasonably be asked in order to fulfil this post.
