We are now accepting applications for positions as a direct entry Chef. The Naval Service is looking to recruit suitably qualified Chefs to be part of our team that patrols and protects our territorial waters. If you enjoy being part of a team and want a career with a difference apply now.

This role involves both on-base duties at the Navy base (in Cobh, Cork) and sea rotations.

About the role of Chef:

  • A Chef in the Naval Service is an essential part of the Logistics Team, providing nourishment to a ship’s company.
  • A chef is involved in purchasing, preparing and serving nutritious food to naval personnel, which is key to assisting with morale onboard, especially in challenging sea conditions.
  • Working within a well-structured kitchen team, you will ensure high standards of food preparation, hygiene, and safety while adapting to the unique constraints of working at sea or on the naval base.
  • You will be responsible for planning food menus to ensure variety and balance.
  • A chef will assist with the training, supervision and mentoring less experienced chefs and also of trainee chefs.
  • You will assist in emergency response situations and exercising, including fire-fighting and damage control duties.

Essential Requirements:

At the time of application, all applicants for appointment as a Chef in the Naval Service must meet the following:

General Requirements:

be a citizen of the Irish State

OR

have a legal entitlement to reside and work in the State for the period of any such appointment.

AND

be of good character and satisfy any security clearance required during the recruitment process.

AND

meet the required minimum standards of medical and physical fitness as assessed during the recruitment process.

Age Requirements:

Applicants must be 18 Years of age and under 39 years of age on date of application.

Professional Qualifications:

Candidates must have attained the required minimum educational qualifications at the time of entry into the Naval Service:

  • FETAC Level 6 in Culinary Arts
  • Quality Qualifications Ireland Level 6 in Culinary Arts
  • NTCB Level 6 in Culinary Arts
  • National equivalent of any of the above
