Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
As a Staff Nurse in the Out Patient Department in Beaumont Hospital you will be expected to deliver high quality nursing care across a diverse range of clinics in a fast paced clinical setting. Key responsibilities include acute and chronic wound care, clinical assessment, assisting with procedures, patient education and maintaining accurate documentation.Working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams, the nurse contributes to efficient patient flow and supports the smooth running of clinics.
Adaptability, flexibility and commitment to ongoing professional development are key trait being sought.
In addition, you are expected to practice within the Code of Practice guidelines from An Bord Altranais and within Nursing and other Hospital Policies and Procedures. You will be held accountable to the Clinical Nurse Manager and in his/her absence to the delegated nurse holding shift responsibility for the out-patient department.Discretion, initiative and an interest in teaching student nurses and preliminary training students to function independently is also a prerequisite. At all times you will practice within the limits of your experience, with due respect for your Scope of Practice and will have available to you more senior expert nurses.
Overall, your responsibilities may be divided into clinical, professional, managerial and educational categories.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- To maintain a high standard of nursing care.
- To develop clinical expertise, leadership and teaching skills through nursing practice.
- To share responsibility with the team for the management of nursing care and the patients environment under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
- To maintain a high standard of professional and ethical responsibility.
CLINICAL
To provide and maintain effective, individualised nursing care by:
- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised nursing care for outpatients within the Roper, Logan, and Tierney Model of Nursing.
- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to patients within guidelines laid out by the NMBI.
- Provide comprehensive wound care, dressings, casting, splinting and assist with minor procedures as required.
- Maintains accurate records and documentation in line with hospital policy and legal standards.
- Support safe patient flow, care for patients requiring emergency admission via OPD, liaising with patient flow and wards as required.
- Promote a safe environment and act as patient advocate throughout their outpatient journey.
- Use the outcomes of patient assessment to develop and implement plans of care in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and the patient, family and/or carer as appropriate.
- Communicate with patients, family and /or carer as appropriate, to assess patient’s needs and provide relevant support, information, education, advice and counselling as required.
- Where appropriate work collaboratively with MDT colleagues across Primary and Secondary Care to provide a seamless service delivery to the patient, family and/or carer as appropriate.
- Identify health promotion priorities for the patient, family and/or carer and support patient self-care in line with best evidence.
- Deal with incidences and accidents in accordance with hospital policy, ensuring timely recording, reporting and follow up as required.
- Approaches interpersonal relationships in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.
- Recognises self-limitations and requests assistance.
- Maintain professionalism at all times and work within the Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics (NMBI, 2025)
- Be responsible for addressing own continuing professional development needs, demonstrating an awareness of current trends and strategies in nursing.
- Maintain a personal record of professional development, utilising a portfolio.
- Discuss present performance with line manager, using job performance review.
- Follow appropriate lines of authority by discussing issues firstly with Clinical Nurse Manager, then with Unit Nurse Manager and then with the Director of Nursing.
- Demonstrates flexibility by assisting in other areas of the Hospital as needed
- Support safe patient flow, care for patients requiring emergency admission via OPD, liaising with patient flow and wards as required.
- Prioritises patient care tasks based on clinical urgency and clinic schedules, ensuring timely interventions and efficient patient flow.
- Anticipate delays or hold-ups and works proactively to maintain service delivery
- Delegates responsibilities to junior nursing staff, student nurses, and healthcare assistants ensuring appropriate skill mix and work load distribution.
- Manage clinic resources and equipment, identifying needs and reporting issues to ensure operational efficiency.
- Demonstrates initiative by identifying service improvements, resolving challenges and contributing to enhanced patient care.
EDUCATION:
- Maintain clinical competence in patient management, keeping up to date with relevant research to ensure the implementation of evidence-based practice.
- Provide the patient, family and/or carer with appropriate information and other supportive interventions to increase their knowledge, skill and confidence in managing their injury/condition.
- Provide mentorship and preceptorship for junior staff/student nurses/healthcare assistants.
- Participate in training programmes/educational sessions for nursing staff, ensuing mandatory training is up to date.
- Show interest in Post Graduate Education/Self Development.
Qualifications:
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

(a) Eligible applicants will be those who on the closing date for the competition:
(i) Are currently registered in the General division of the Register of Nurses & Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland [NMBI] (BordAltranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann)
(ii) Have at least 1 year post registration fulltime experience (or an aggregate of 1years post registration full time experience)
(iii) Have the clinical, managerial and administrative capacity to properly dischargethe functions of the role.
(iv) Candidates must demonstrate evidence of Continuing Professional Development.- Annual Registration
- On appointment, Practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the General division of the Register of Nurses and Midwives maintained by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (Bord Altranais agus Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann)
- Confirm annual registration with NMBI to the HSE by way of the annual Patient
- Health
Candidates for and any person holding the office must be of good character.
Desirable- Proficiency in wound care, including chronic wound management, complex dressings, compression therapy, post-operative wound management
- Casting and Splinting experience.
