Overview:

At John Sisk & Son, we are seeking an experienced Planner to join our team. This role is central to ensuring the successful delivery of projects by developing and managing programmes across pre-construction and construction phases.

As a Planner, you will collaborate with project managers, engineers, commercial teams and the wider supply chain to ensure programmes are accurate, realistic and effectively managed. You will also take a lead in risk management, progress reporting and mentoring junior colleagues, while contributing to continuous improvement across the business.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop baseline contract programmes covering design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
  • Prepare target programmes that identify opportunities for improvement against contract requirements.
  • Produce tender event programmes for subcontractor procurement, including design release and lead-in activities.
  • Maintain accurate planning documentation within collaborative data environments (CDEs).
  • Create 2D and 4D phasing models to illustrate sequencing, logistics and project methodologies.
  • Monitor risks and opportunities, applying mitigation measures, float and time risk allowances.
  • Support project teams in developing safe and efficient construction methodologies.
  • Track subcontractor programmes and produce as-built records highlighting variances.
  • Contribute to change requests by advising on programme impacts.
  • Undertake peer reviews of planning outputs to ensure quality and consistency.
  • Report regularly to project and regional leadership on programme performance and risks.
  • Mentor and support assistant/graduate planners, contributing to their professional development.

Experience:

  • Essential
  • Proven experience in planning within complex construction projects
  • Proficiency in planning and programme management software (e.g., Asta Powerproject)
  • Strong knowledge of UK and EU construction contract frameworks (e.g., NEC, JCT)
  • Strong IT skills and ability to work with digital planning/reporting tools
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving and organisational skills
Desirable
  • Experience with 4D planning tools such as Synchro
  • Knowledge of BIM processes and collaborative data environments (CDEs)
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior team members
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (e.g., CPD events, professional body involvement)

Qualifications:

  • Essential
  • Degree or diploma in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Project Management or a related discipline. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
  • Certification or advanced training in planning software (e.g., Asta Powerproject).
Desirable
  • Membership (or eligibility for membership) of a professional body such as CIOB, ICE, or APM.
  • Advanced training in planning software (e.g., progress analysis, S-curve reporting, cost/resource management).
  • Training in Synchro, BIM, or contract awareness (NEC, JCT).
  • Training in presentation or leadership skills.
