Responsibilities:

We are looking for Operating Theatre Nurses to join our dynamic team of healthcare professionals to provide high quality patient centred care in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care setting.

The post holder is expected to provide high quality patient centred care to the Theatre Department to include Theatres, Minor Procedure Rooms, Day Theatres including any future expansion of the Theatre Department.

The post holder works as part of the multi-disciplinary team, establishing and maintaining good working relationships aimed at delivering a high standard of care.

The post holder is required to develop additional clinical skills pertinent to the specialty.

The post holder is responsible for managing the perioperative care and needs of patients, by ensuring high standards and quality care is maintained in accordance with the NMBI standards as well as adhering to Beaumont Hospital values, policies and procedures.

Principal Duties and Responsibilites
  • To be accountable and responsible for own actions and to know the content of their own Scope of Practice for Nursing and Midwifery, Code of Professional Conduct, Beaumont Hospital policies, guidelines and competencies relevant to practice
  • Maintain knowledge of, and work in adherence to all Beaumont Hospital Standard Operating Procedures and policies
  • To develop specialist knowledge and skills of nursing practice relating to their designated working environment i.e. scrub/circulating or anaesthetic/ recovery nursing
  • To ensure the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety are maintained at all times in line with national and local policies, procedures and guidelines as well as utilising evidence based practice
  • Prepare clinical areas for receiving perioperative patients and complete all safety checks in line with local & National policy
  • Communicate with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to plan and coordinate patient care
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised, high quality patient care pre-, intra- and post- operatively
  • Collaborate with all members of the multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate high quality patient care pre-, intra- and post- operatively and to work within the nursing standards that have been agreed

MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

CLINICAL:

  1. To promote and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff
  2. To recommend/identify changes that will enhance patient safety and ensure the deliverance of high standard and quality patient care
  3. Works within their scope of practice at all times, as outlined by the NMBI
  4. Assesses patient’s condition on an ongoing basis and keeps the nurse in charge of the theatre/unit aware of any relevant changes which occur
  5. Actively participates in patient care and performs procedures accurately, completely and safely in line with hospital policies and standard operating procedures in the specialist area of perioperative nursing
  6. Maintain accurate, timely and legible clinical and legal documentation, in accordance with national and local policies
  7. Ensure patient/professional confidentiality and data protection in line with General Data Protections regulations (GDPR)
  8. Respects the dignity and confidentiality of patients, serving as an advocate as necessary
  9. Maintains appropriate knowledge of risk management and incident reporting in line with hospital and national policy
  10. Contributes to nursing quality assurance by being aware of and assisting in clinical audits and in data collection
  11. To develop clinical expertise, leadership and teaching skills through nursing practice
  12. To maintain supervision of junior nursing staff and providing direction and supports as necessary

COMMUNICATION:

  1. Communicates with all patients and members of the multidisciplinary team in an appropriate and professional manner at all times
  2. Reports any unsafe or unprofessional practice to the CNM/line Manager
  3. Promotes dignity and respect in the workplace amongst colleagues
PROFESSIONAL
  1. To accept responsibility and accountability for own personal/professional development and be aware of current trends and strategies in nursing
  2. To manage the nursing care of patients competently and be responsible for their professional actions or omissions
  3. Integrates evidence-based research into nursing care in the perioperative department whilst maintaining personal and professional development
  4. Maintain working knowledge of all national and local policies.
  5. Respects cultural and religious practices of patients and staff
  6. Is punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
  7. Complies with all online and practical mandatory training as per hospital policy.
MANAGEMENT
  1. Demonstrates ability to organise care for caseload of patients in line with all members of the multidisciplinary team
  2. Displays initiative and manages time efficiently and effectively
  3. To assist with the development and maintenance of standards of care and quality assurance programmes/initiatives
  4. To adhere to hospital policies and maintain effective links with support services and other departments
EDUCATION
  1. Completes required orientation as directed by the department
  2. To promote a learning environment and encourage professional development
  3. To follow current developments in nursing which will increase professional knowledge and skills
  4. The individual nurse is responsible for undertaking relevant continued professional development as in line with the NMBI ‘Competency Framework’, in order to develop their own professional practice.
  5. The applicant must commit to undertake specific courses to enhance their knowledge and skill set, including following the local education pathway as well as attending other relevant courses/study days.
  6. To be able to teach and act as a preceptor (after appropriate training) to other nursing staff and students in the department

Qualifications:

Mandatory
  • Be registered in the General Division of the Register of Nurses and have their names maintained on the Live Register with National Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

Desirable:

  • Recent Operating Department experience in an Acute Hospital Setting
