The Role

A hospital in Limerick is seeking a Medical Scientist to join its microbiology laboratory team. This is a hands-on role working across the benches in a hospital setting, focusing on patient samples, clinical workflows, and maintaining ISO 15189 standards.

You’ll be involved in bacteriology, cell culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and blood culture workflows. The role also includes supporting quality systems, using LIS platforms, and contributing to continuous improvement in laboratory processes.

• Perform microbiological testing on a wide range of patient specimens
• Work across the benches in bacteriology, cell culture, and blood culture
• Carry out AST and escalate critical results appropriately
• Operate and maintain systems including Vitek 2 Compact, BacT/ALERT 3D, MALDI-TOF, and GeneXpert
• Maintain compliance with ISO 15189 and GLP standards in a hospital laboratory setting
• Contribute to internal quality control, EQA, and audit readiness
• Support LIS workflows and ensure integrity of clinical data
• Collaborate with infection control and clinical teams to improve patient outcomes

• Minimum 2 years’ experience working on the benches in a hospital medical laboratory
• Minimum 2 years’ post-qualification experience in microbiology
• Knowledge of ISO 15189 and quality systems in a hospital/clinical environment
• Experience in AST, blood cultures, bacteriology, and cell culture
• Familiarity with molecular diagnostics and LIS platforms
• Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills

• Part-time role (20 hrs per week, 10am–4pm core hours, Mon–Fri)
• Salary: €25,000–€30,000 pro-rata (FTE €43,300–€73,600)
• Flexibility with potential to progress to full-time
