Eligibility to participate on CE is generally linked to those who are 21 years or over and in receipt of a qualifying social welfare payment for 1 year or more or 18 years and over for certain disadvantaged groups. Your eligibility will have to be verified by the Department.

Applicants should supply suitable character references and be prepared to complete a Garda vetting application form.

Training for a Kitchen Porter Role
The Kitchen Porter Training Program aims to equip CE participants with the necessary skills and experience to work efficiently in a professional kitchen. This training includes a combination of theoretical learning, practical hands-on experience, and essential workplace certifications to help participants progress towards employment in the hospitality or catering sector.
Training Requirements for a Kitchen PorterFood Safety & Hygiene Training (HACCP – Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)
- Understanding food hygiene regulations and industry best practices.
- Safe storage, handling, and preparation of food.
- Preventing cross-contamination and understanding allergens.
- Maintaining cleanliness in food preparation areas.
- Certification: Participants will complete a Level 1 or Level 2 HACCP (depending on employer requirements).
- Safe lifting, carrying, and handling of kitchen supplies and equipment.
- Reducing the risk of workplace injuries.
- Proper posture and technique for handling heavy loads.
- Certification: A Manual Handling Certificate will be awarded upon completion.
- Understanding fire hazards in a kitchen environment.
- Correct use of fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and emergency exits.
- Procedures to follow in case of kitchen fires or gas leaks.
- Certification: Basic Fire Safety Training Certificate.
Basic first aid skills, including burn treatment, cuts, and scalds.
Responding to choking incidents.
Understanding workplace accident reporting.
Certification: Basic First Aid Certificate (optional but highly beneficial).
Knife Handling & Basic Kitchen Skills- Safe handling and storage of kitchen knives and equipment.
- Learning to prepare ingredients (e.g., peeling, chopping, and portioning food).
- Assisting chefs with basic food prep tasks.
- Hands-on practice will be provided during work experience.
- Best practices for cleaning kitchen surfaces, floors, and equipment.
- Proper use of cleaning chemicals and disinfectants.
- Ensuring kitchen waste disposal follows environmental regulations.
- Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness to comply with health and safety regulations.
- Practical hands-on training in a real working kitchen.
