The Department of Defence invites applications for appointment to the position of Senior Biomedical Laboratory Scientist. This competition is open to all candidates who meet the minimum eligibility criteria.

Location: Currently at St Bricin’s Military Hospital, Infirmary Road, Dublin 8, with expected move to Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co. Dublin during 2026.
About the Job:
The Senior Biomedical Laboratory Scientist performs advanced laboratory testing on patient samples, manages daily operations for the laboratory, supervises and trains other scientists, ensuring quality assurance and adherence to safety standards, and contributes to the development and implementation of new methodologies and equipment.

The position of Senior Biomedical Laboratory Scientist is essential to the provision of medical services and informing patient treatments and wider Defence Forces (DF) human resources administration and practices, by ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory services.

EXPERIENCE / REQUIREMENTS (Mandatory & Desired):

Mandatory: Experience required
  • Possess an appropriate qualification and be registered as a Senior Medical Scientist with CORU.
  • Possess four years full time clinical experience (or an aggregate of four years’ clinical experience) as a medical scientist in a clinical diagnostic laboratory since qualifying as a medical scientist.
  • Demonstrate evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Possess good IT skills with an in-depth knowledge of a Laboratory Information System.

Desired:

  • Possess good communications skills, enthusiastic to work in a demand driven environment.
  • Ability to learn quickly and be adaptable in approach, good attention to detail, ability to work well alone and as part of a team.
  • Have experience in Clinical Chemistry (AU480), Haematology (Cell Dyne Ruby, G6 screening), Virology/ Endocrinology (Architect 1000i) and Mycology.
  • Experience in External Quality Control i.e. Aurevia, IEQAS, UKNEQAS.
