Microbiology Medical Scientist (Part-Time, 20 Hours)

Summary

Microbiology Medical Scientist supporting the safe, compliant, and efficient day-to-day operation of BD’s microbiology laboratory. This is a hands-on, laboratory-based role focused on microbiological testing, laboratory safety, and adherence to GLP and biosafety standards.

• Support the safe and efficient operation of the microbiology laboratory in line with health, safety, and quality standards
• Prepare microbial cultures, reagents, and perform routine microbiological testing
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment
• Write, maintain, and enforce laboratory procedures and SOPs
• Support and train non-scientific staff in the safe handling of live organisms
• Facilitate laboratory access and induction for professional visitors
• Maintain accurate laboratory records in compliance with GLP and biosafety requirements
• Conduct routine laboratory safety checks and walkthroughs
• Manage laboratory inventory including stock monitoring and replenishment
• Support internal and external audit activities
• Collaborate with EHS, Facilities, and cross-functional teams
• Identify and implement best-practice operational procedures
• Support the introduction of new technologies and laboratory improvements
• Ensure adherence to quality assurance standards and professional codes of practice

• Registration on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by CORU
• Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (FAMLS) or equivalent
• Membership or eligibility for Membership of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Science (MAMLS) or equivalent
• Experience working in a hospital microbiology laboratory
• Minimum of 2 years’ post-qualification experience
• Strong knowledge of ISO 15189 requirements
• Up-to-date knowledge of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and guidelines
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, planning, and organisational skills
